In watching the film clip of Gallipoli, I saw a lot of death and destruction. I saw the destruction from the massive artillery such as guns and cannons, but I also saw barbed wire and fires too. Throughout the film clip, dead people were everywhere. From all of the violence, many people were instantly killed, but many were also injured. During WWI, the medical technology was less sophisticated, so I'm thinking that many injured people died because the medical care wasn't as good as it is today. Due to poor conditions in the medical tents and dirty germ-y surroundings, soldiers just became sicker and died from diseases and infections from injuries. The film clip showed barbed wire, and soldiers' skin could get ripped open from accidentally running through the wire. Poor treatment of these wounds could lead to serious infections, sometimes leading to death.
WWI had the greatest number of casualties and this had a negative impact on society. Soldiers left families behind when they went to war. When a soldier doesn't return from the war, his family is left without a wage earner. Even if the women who stayed behind worked, they may not be able to make enough money to support their families, and the poverty leads to serious issues. Theft and crime will rise, as theft also is a means of supporting families when people don't make enough money to pay their bills. Crime, in general, may also increase as people will do whatever they have to do to survive. Prostitution may also increase as this is one way that women, who were the ones left without husbands, can make money to support their families. Widowed women chose this profession especially if they had no job skills.
Children are also affected by the casualties of war. When their fathers or mothers did not return home, children lose a parent, which is always difficult. Growing up in a home with only one parent, who has to work long hours, sometimes leads to problems such as lonliness or abuse by a child care provider. When children have the benefit of living with their grandparents or other family members, their lonliness may be less, but they still lost a parent, which is really sad. The children could also grow up and poverty. Lonliness and proverty can also lead to depression and other emotional problems.
